Hi Jackie, I am a new quilter from Ontario Canada. I love your video tutorials. I am just starting my very first One Block Wonder. I have at this point cut my repeats. That brings me to my first question, I cut 6 sections, I plan on hexies, can I cut 12 sections and just make a larger quilt? I want to have a generous queen size and I have not found anything that tells me how much fabric I need. Also, I just pressed the fold out, when I cut my strips, this fabric is longer than my cutting mat, what do I do about that?

Hi Donna, If you don’t already belong, you should join the One Block Wonder Quilt Forum Facebook page. In the Guides section someone has figured out how much fabric to different size OBW quilts. Yes, you can cut 12 repeats. You can cut as many repeats as you want as long as there are 6 in each pile layers to align before cutting your strips. We have found that it doesn’t really matter whether you cut your strips along the 44” edge or from the shorter selvage edge. It is much easier to cut from the shorter edge. Otherwise you need at 44”of cutting mat, which you can accomplish by taping the bottom of two mats together.

Hi Jackie, thank you for the reply, so quickly. too. Awesome about the cutting of the strips. I guess I could join two mats. As for the Facebook page, I am not a facebook gal..so that doesn’t work for me. But thanks for the hint.
        All the best.

I use a pointed tip ruler because I like dog ears to help join the rows. Actually my way to cut the triangles is to use the Olfa 6” x 12” frosted ruler. the way the 60 Degree lines are on the ruler make it quick and easy to cut the equilateral triangles.

Hi, I’m from CNY as well and not far from you. I didn’t realize you designed the converging geese block…I love that one and featured it on the back of my quilted jacket. Now for my question. Is there a way to make a shaded four patch with a HST for the for the small square? I have the shaded four patch tech sheet as well as the tools needed. Thanks.

Jackie, thanks for reaching out to me following the class Sat. I have my fabric cut out and aligned. Now getting the courage to cut it in strips. Can’t decide which ruler I want to use. The pointy tip ruler I think. My fabric length is 23 and 1/4. Cut it down to 21?

Is there a trim down tool like the Tucker trimmer for half square triangles only for the hexagon or half hexis that are sewn together in a strip the matched up with their other half strips? Does this question make any sense to yo at all? I am sorry for being such a dunce. I have made just one OBW and really still learning. I am excited to have found your site and will be watching your videos for sure!

I just found your website today. I’ve watched your videos on YouTube and I’m excited to try this. A couple of our quilt group had planned to take a class and it filled up too quick, so we’re going to try it on our own with your video help. Will be our first one. Yours are so beautiful! Your instructions are so easy to follow, thank you for posting them for us to follow. I’ve signed up for your emails too and Facebook page.

Hello, I am taking your class (two Saturdays in March) at J. Madeleine’s in E. Rochester NY. Will these two fabrics work? I wanted to use part of the panel with the all over pattern surrounding it. That said, it doesn’t say what the repeat is! I will call them. Thank you! https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Wilmington-Prints-Flower-Market-Danui-Nai-Large-Floral-Panel-Multi?quantity=1&custcol_tt_itemoption_decimals=1 and https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Wilmington-Prints-Flower-Market-Danui-Nai-Packed-Flowers-Multi?quantity=1&custcol_tt_itemoption_decimals=1

Thank you so much for your quick reply. The all-over print will work as well…is that correct? It is the second URL in my message above. First time taking a class for this type of quilt…just want to ensure it goes well!

Thank you for the very quick reply. I purchased 8 panels only because sometimes I make mistakes and it’s good to have the extra just in case. Looking forward to seeing you on the two Saturdays in March! Thank you again. Linda

Did you download my pdf doc about using panels? It is under the Class schedule tab. I cut my strips 3 3/4” and cut them selvedge to selvedge. Although on Facebook group One Block Wonder Quilt forum they say it doesn’t matter which way you cut your strips. When I made The Tree, the panel, was so big I chose to cut the strips the shorter way, cut edge to cut edge because it was easier to manage.

        Hi Jackie,
I am signed up for your class on OBW at the Triangle Quilt Guild in May. I am selecting my panel fabric now. I understand that 7 are recommended with 24” panels, but how big is the resulting quilt? Also, if the panel is 36” or 45” wide instead of 24”, how many are needed? Can you tell me what size quilt I would end up with using say…..6 panels from each o these?
I appreciate your feedback and look forward to the class.

You are a fantastic teacher. I attended your OBW class in Virginia Beach. Used the peacock fabric in the black and gold color way with unique borders. Let me know if you remember it. Or me. I’ve been wanting to attend more of your classes and I will as soon as my health is better. Love your skills!

I came across your utube tutorials for OBW quilts a few weeks back and they inspired me so much that I had to have a go at making one for myself. This has been the first quilt I have ever attempted and I finished it this morning so I just wanted to thank you for your awesome tutorials.

You have doxies AND you make beautiful OBW quilts! You must be a great woman! 🙂 I commented on another post under your hexagon gallery page, then came to this page and saw your doxies! I had a mini long hair for 13 years, but lost her in May 2013. Hug your babies for me! 🙂

I’m sorry for your loss. I am a Doxie fan, I just love them. My sister has one also, her name is Zoey and she is 1 year old. My girls are 7. They are so short they can’t get on the furniture without ramps, so there are ramps all over my house. Zoey runs and jumps like a. Circus dog. If you email me at sewjackie@live.com tomorrow I will send you the class notes.

I just saw where that CT Publishing had you take down the tutorials. I sent an email to the publisher telling them how disappointed I am. I only bought the book after seeing your tutorials. They were so helpful. My friend and I plan to start our OBWs this Friday. We were counting on your tutorials and are so disappointed!

Thank you so much. Once you make a OBW you never look at fabric the same way again. I am always on the lookout. For the most part I can even tell online when it is a large enough print. Alexander Henry has great OBW fabric. I find a lot on eQuilter.com, hancocks-Paducah.com, fabric.com

Jackie, I am one of those new people who discovered this page. I found you on Youtube first, checking out your OBW page! Holy smokes, you are amazing. I really like how you have “broken” some of the OBW rules to great effect! I admire the dickens out of you, and love the OBW tutorial. You are so down to earth! Hope I get to meet you one day! Sincerely, Mary

Jackie – CONGRATS upon your most successful completion of the Deb Tucker school for quilting ninja’s. Does this mean you will add more pockets to your ninja vest? When I read about the certification program from Deb Tucker’s site, I immediately thought of you – it was destiny that you would attend. So far, I have managed (aka used) just three of her rulers….looks like more classes with you are in my future to use the rest! Again, nicely done Jackie and as we say in the military “BZ” (bravo zulu).

    Cheers! Liz
