OBW #60 and so much more…..

It’s December 15, 2016. I haven’t blogged in 3 months as there was an illness in my family that took precedence. My family has received quilts from me for Christmas for many years. I hadn’t done that in a while, but this year I wanted to show my love for them. I made my son Josh a One Block Wonder (OBW). Josh is my very own Grizzly Adams. This is my 60th One Block Wonder and is named “Camping with Friends”. Camping with Friends was made with Alexander Henry Fabric with a 12″repeat .

Josh called me last night. He loves the quilt. It has grizzly bears on the back.

I finally completed a King size “Yellow Brick Road” or my oldest son Jason. He was thrilled. He waited a long time for this quilt.

As you can see, Tuck is always near by. I made my youngest Granddaughter Samantha, a Minnie Mouse Quilt. That prompted my sister Mary to get her a Minnie Mouse. So, I made Minnie a smaller scale quilt like Sam’s. The label says “This quilt made for Minnie Mouse, By Sam’s Grandmother Jackie O’Brien”. Of course everything fit into a tote with Minnie Mouse embroidered on it.

I had the great pleasure to spend a few days with several Studio 180 Design Certified Instructors at Bridle Creek Bed & Breakfast in Hamilton, NY. We were hosted by Barb Hipsley, proprietor extraordinaire. What a wonderful time we had. the photo below shows us all in our Minion pants.

This time was totally devoted to quilting. I was able to make some small quilts for my sister Mary. She loves to put them on tables.

This quilt measure 39″ by 49″. It is from Deb Tucker’s book Hidden Treasures. I made 5″ blocks using the Hunter Star Petite tool. This size hunter star makes a great baby quilt.

I named this “Mary’s Stars. It is my original design. I’m very pleased with it. I used Studio 180 Design V Block & Corner Pop tools. The 6″ finished star blocks are the same block, I just reversed the colors. It measures 39′ by 45”.

This one is called “Game Board” from a book of antique doll quilts. It is only 22″ square. Of course I Tuckerized it and used my Wing Clipper 1 to make all those Flying Geese.

Spring has finally sprung here in Central New York. I spent the last week in March in North Carolina with Deb Tucker and my fellow Studio 180 Design Certified Instructors (CI’s). We meet up every year to continue our Studio 180 education. It is one of my favorite gatherings. It is so good to see everyone again. We learn so much from each other. We are more like a family than CI’s.

The best part was we got to play with Deb’s new tool coming out at Spring Market, it’s fabulous!

The other best part of my trip was spending time with my Sons Jason & Josh, whom I love and adore!

On the way home I stopped in Virginia Beach and taught a Northern Neighbors class. We had such a good time!

I sure miss you guys!

When I got home it was my determination to paint my quilt studio aptly named “Tuckerville”!

Painting paneling is horrible! But this room was so dark I couldn’t stand it anymore. I chose what I consider to be a happy color “Aqua Chiffon”!

The stairwell is bright now! You can see the Joyce McCorduck (my mother) memorial Shultz & Dooley display. The girls to welcome you at the bottom of the stairs, along with one of my brooms for a fast get away! And, Grandma Bessie’s quilt watching over me!

It is a long room, with places to sew and 2 cutting stations, a design wall, not to mention a comfortable couch and big TV. I love the new color.

I want to introduce you to the “Mayor of Tuckerville”

Her name is Tucker, Tuck for short, because she has already tucked herself in my heart. I pick her up in a few weeks, there will be more pictures to follow.

This is my finished mystery given to the Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor’s. It will be released as a pattern early summer 2014. I’ve a bad cold and have been taking a lot of NyQuil. They have been teasing me that I will have to go Betty Ford to get of NyQuil. Needless to say, I made some mistakes because of NyQuil Residue. I had to do a lot of un-sewing. I jokingly called my quilt “Frank” because he had been taken apart and sew back together so many times he had scars!

We used Split Rects, Wing Clipper I, and the Tucker Trimmer I. This is a fun quilt to make!

While I was at Studio 180 Design Teacher Certification, as I was just trying to keep up two other students; Phyllis Fay and Sarah Furrer were busy creating. Below is what they whipped up.

What I love about this top other than great technique, is all the different tools they used to create a quilt without using a pattern. When I am giving a presentation on all the Studio 180 Design tools I always show this picture. I am crazy about the outer border. I love the way they used the Split Rects tool. It looks just like they paper pieced it but it was accomplished with a ruler!

You start in the middle of the quilt with the Lemoyne Star and work your way out with each new border. I have also listed the pre-finished sizes or trimmed sizes.

• One 12 ½” Lemoyne Star
• Four 3 ½” shaded 4-patch
• Sixteen 3 ½” little houses
• Eight 3 ½” squares of background fabric
• Fifty-six 3 1/2” combo blocks (which means you have to make 28 Half Square Triangles (HST) blocks first; remembering that they yield a double number of blocks)
• Four 3 ½ “Square/Squared blocks
• Twenty 3 ½ ” X 6″ ½ ” Diamond Rects
• 2 ½ ” border of the background fabric
• Four 4 ½ ” V Blocks
• Four 4 ½ ” Corner Beams
• Eighty 2 ½ ” x 4 ½ ” Split Rects (which means you have to make 40 by using the rights sides together method)
