What’s Black & White & Read All Over?

Oops, I mean what’s black & white RED all over…why my quilt of course.  Deb Tucker released “Hidden Treasures in 2015.

hidden-treasures

This fabulous book gives you the opportunity to learn to make Hunter Star quilts like you’ve never seen them before.  There are 36 different patterns in this book. 29 of them make a throw size quilt that requires 8 light and 8 dark fat quarters plus fabric for your inner & outer borders and there are 7 bed runner patterns.

Black & White & Red All Over

I chose to make one made by Sue Tucker called Painted Desert.  You will not believe the variations of Hunter Star that you can make by not sewing together the two triangles that make up the block.  When you take those triangles to the design wall you’ll be amazed at what you can create, and this book shows you how!

Tuck always has to get in the picture.  Hidden Treasures makes throw size quilts using the Rapid Fire Hunter Star Petite Tool by Deb Tucker. Deb is currently working on her second Hunter Star book “Royal Treasures” that uses the Rapid Fire Hunter Star Large tool and will feature Queen & King size quilts. I am fortunate to have one my quilts in that book.

Perfectly Paperless Piecing

Not that I have anything against paper piecing, but…if I can get the same results without having to paper piece, I’m all for it!  Earlier this year Deb Tucker introduced her new tool “The Large Square Squared” and it is teriffic!  It operates like the original  Square Squared, but the original was limited to 6 sizes whereas the large Square Squared gives you high precision for 12 different size units from 1″ to 12″.  As always it offers minimal waste and right & left handed instructions.  With it’s improved guidelines it takes two tools, Part A and Part B to accomplish all this.

image

But wait, there’s more!  Deb has a new pattern about to be released called Peach Melba. It is a Studio 180 Design companion pattern for the Large Square Squared tool that makes a beautiful pineapple block.

I only have one block done so far. But with this great Kaffe Fassett fabric I can’t wait to finish it.  This is a 12″ finished block.  The Large Square Squared tool made the process easy.  I would never have guessed I could make a pineapple quilt so perfect with out paper piecing!  The pattern gives you the choice of Lap, Twin or Queen size quilts.

I did finish “Filigree” another Studio 180 Design companion pattern for the Large Square Squared & Corner Beam tool.  It was design by fellow Certified Instructor Sarah Furrer.  This pattern also gives you the choice of Lap, Twin or Queen size quilts.

Filigree

I made the Lap size, 54″ x 70″.  I love this pattern.  It is a great way to get to know your new Large Square Squared tool.

There are only two blocks. The first is the Snail Tail that uses the Large Square Squared tool, the second uses the Corner Beam tool.

image

See why I call it perfectly paperless piecing?  What a beautiful back of a block!  Both Peach Melba & Filigree are not yet released, so be sure to sign up for the Studio 180 Design Newsletter at www.studio180design.net so you get news first.

Fellow Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor, Michelle Hiatt has also just released a new companion pattern for the Large Square Squared and Diamond Rects tools called Jenn’s Journey!

You can find Jenn’s Journey at many local quilt shops or go to Michelle’s Etsy shop “Sew On the Go“.

I have my fabric picked out and ready to cut for Jenn’s Journey!

Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice…that would be what Deb Tucker named her pattern:

Summer Solstice

The bright colors she chose are gorgeous.  I chose warm country colors:

Rise & Shine, Summer’s Over!

My light background fabric has chickens on it, hence the name Rise & Shine.  This beautiful quilt finishes at 64″ by 80″.

Summer Solstice Block

This is a companion pattern for Studio 180 Design’s Wing Clipper I,  V Block & Corner Beam tools.  This block has 25 units in it, but Deb’s tools make it a breeze.

29 Lemoyne Stars

My sister fell in love with a fabric line by Moda called The Potting Shed by Holly Taylor.  So I designed a quilt  using Deb Tucker’s Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star tool that makes it so easy to construct perfect Lemoyne stars with NO “Y” seams!

image

Of course Tucker had to oversee the quilting process, after all she is the Quality Control Officer of Tuckerville.

I just finished sewing on the binding in time for her birthday tomorrow, phew!

image

We just put it on her bed and it looks great.  29 twelve inch lemoyne stars and one panel.

image

Mary loved the panel of the potting shed so I was sure to place it so it would be in the middle of the bed.

My sister is a collector of vintage dolls.  She has a beautiful bedroom that displays only part of her collection.

Happy Birthday Mary, your quilt was made with love!

My OBW Stash

I’ll show you mine if you show me yours…fabric stash that is!  There is a great group on Facebook called “One Block Wonder Quilt Forum” that has over 5000 worldwide members.  The group feeds the souls of us that are somewhat obsessed with One Block Wonders (OBW).  This process was created by Maxine Rosenthal.  She has produced 3 books: One Blocks Wonders, One Block Wonders Encore! & One Block Wonders Cubed.  All 3 are essential! (Rumor has it there is a 4th in the works!)

I was on Facebook a little while ago and we were talking about our OBW Stashes, how much was too much, etc.  Ann B. stated she would love a peak at mine. I proudly stated  I had at least 40 six yard pieces of fabric set aside for OBW’s.  Well, it’s a good thing we talked.,because my stash is dwindling…I only have 35 six yard pieces set aside!  Lord have mercy, I need to go shopping!

I only have 2 six yard pieces of this Wizard of Oz fabric left!!! Did I mention I have a slight obsession with the Wizard of Oz?  But I still have several tubs of The Wizard of Oz fabric.

Well, there you have it.  I’m willing to bet there is someone out there that can beat my stash!

Studio 180 Academy

A week ago it was cold here Central NY.  This week summer has arrived in full force.  I don’t know where the time has gone.  I have been busy pulling up carpet and embroidering signs for the corners of vendor booths.

image

These double sided signs are the size that would fit on small garden flag holders. When you hang them on the corners of your booth it helps customers find your booth when they look down the long, busy isles.

Tuck just popped down to Tuckerville to see what I was up to.

image

She is so much fun. Tucker is a little over 4 months old and is a spit fire, she is running the joint.  She is keeping the Doxies on their toes!

So, this is Tuckerville

Spring has finally sprung here in Central New York.  I spent the last week in March in North Carolina with Deb Tucker and my fellow Studio 180 Design Certified Instructors (CI’s).  We meet up every year to continue our Studio 180 education.  It is one of my favorite gatherings.  It is so good to see everyone again.  We learn so much from each other.  We are more like a family than CI’s.

This is Carla Alexiuk and I with Dan Perkins photo bombing us!

Some blocks from a pre-cut challenge.

The best part was we got to play with Deb’s new tool coming out at Spring Market, it’s fabulous!

The other best part of my trip was spending time with my Sons Jason & Josh, whom I love and adore!

On the way home I stopped in Virginia Beach and taught a Northern Neighbors class.  We had such a good time!

I sure miss you guys!

When I got home it was my determination to paint my quilt studio aptly named “Tuckerville”!

image

Painting paneling is horrible!  But this room was so dark I couldn’t stand it anymore.  I chose what I consider to be a happy color “Aqua Chiffon”!

The stairwell is bright now!  You can see the Joyce McCorduck (my mother) memorial Shultz & Dooley display.  The girls to welcome you at the bottom of the stairs, along with one of my brooms for a fast get away!  And, Grandma Bessie’s quilt watching over me!

It is a long room, with places to sew and 2 cutting stations, a design wall, not to mention a comfortable couch and big TV.  I love the new color.

I want to introduce you to the “Mayor of Tuckerville”

image

Her name is Tucker, Tuck for short, because she has already tucked herself in my heart.  I pick her up in a few weeks, there will be more pictures to follow.

Go quilt something!

Have you ever been to Vermont?

I have an unusual question for you.  I have been approached by “Quilting in Vermont” about teaching a One Block Wonder weekend retreat at the Strong House Inn in Vermont in April 2017. I need to know if any of my One Block Wonder devotees would be interested in attending.

The dates are April 21, 22 & 23, 2017.  The cost per person for double occupancy is $395. Single occupancy is $470.  This price is all-inclusive including food & the teachers fee.  Please think about it and visit the links above to see how beautiful the Strong House Inn is.  I’m posting this to see if there would be any interest.  This is just a fact-finding expedition, no commitment yet.  I need to let them know in the next two weeks.  Thanks for your input.
